DEADLY WRONG-WAY Pole Vault FACTS!

The following list is a partial transcription from "The American Journal of Sports Medicine" tables (American Orthopoedic Society) displayed lower on this webpage. Dr. Barry P. Boden has stated that he believes "there are hundreds, if not thousands" more undocumented catastrophic pole vault related injuries than listed here. Two additional names have been added to the end of my transcribed list that I've confirmed outside of Dr. Barry Boden's documentation: Chuckie VanKuelen, age 14, 1979, along with James Frohmader, age 18, 1977. Each injury is listed by AGE of Victim - YEAR of Injury - NAME of Victim - INJURY SUMMARY:

  * 19 - 1971 - Hicks - coma 2 weeks, hospital 6 weeks, closed head;
  *  ?  - 1972 - JBJ44 - severe concussion, hospitalization, broken vertebrae in c section;
  * 21 - 1973 - Sheppard - broken tail bone and c1 and 2;
  * 20 - 1976 - Randy - Texas Tech – BOX – college meet;
  * 18 - 1977 - Unknown - DEATH at Michigan State Meet;
  * 23 - 1980 - Snyder - DEATH – severe head injury;
  * 17 - 1982 - Unknown - DEATH – skull fracture;
  * 22 - 1982 - Halverson – coma 3 days, skull fracture, hospitalized 3 weeks;
  * 17 - 1983 - Unknown - South Dakota High School boy, serious head injury, multiple broken bones;
  * 14 - 1983 - Sebastian - DEATH - severe head injury;
  * 18 - 1983 - Ohnstad - DEATH - severe head injury and spinal cord;
  * 22 - 1984 - Pursley - severe concussion, hospitalization, broken tail bone;
  * 23 - 1985 - Rappe - severe concussion, broken arm and hip;
  * 17 - 1986 - Wagner - t1-t2 fracture, paralysis;
  * 17 - 1987 - Dixon - DEATH – skull fracture, severe brain injury;
  * 17 - 1988 - Brawer - hospitalized 3 weeks, severe concussion;
  * 17 - 1988 - Unknown - closed head, severe head injury;
  *  ?  - 1988 - Huber - severe injuries, landed in BOX;

  * 19 - 2002 - Dare - DEATH – severe head trauma, brain injury, skull fracture;
  * 21 - 2002 - Keefe - compression fracture of pelvis, internal bleeding;

  * 22 - 2003 - Gensic - broken collar bone, hip and several ribs, collapsed lung, 2 weeks hospital;

  * 16 - 2007 - Couch - skull fracture, linear lunency, c7 transverse;
  * 23 - 2007 - Burnett - severe head injury, severe concussion;
  * 19 - 2008 - Kear - closed head injury, 2 months hospital;
  * 18 - 2008 - Moberg - serious box injuries;
  * 18 - 2008 - Esparaza - serious box injuries;

  * 19 - 2008 - Lutz - severe head injury, permanently disabled;

  * 16 - 2013 - Bennett - pelvis injury, 4 weeks;
  * 17 - 2013 - Dobson - broken c6 and c7, separated shoulder;
  * 18 - 2013 - Clark - temporary paralysis, torn cartilage, broken ribs;
  * 20 - 2014 - Cassidy - severe head injuries;
  * 16 - 1990 - Trezise - DEATH - severe head injury, box caused;
  * 19 - 2010 - Mononen - severe head injuries, broken pelvis;
  *  ?  - 2010 - Sollin - severe nerve, leg and hip injuries;
  * 19 - 2005 - Singh - spinal injury, paralyzed neck down, kidney failure (status unknown);
  * 14 - 1979 - VanKeulen - DEATH – severe brain injury;
